Emigre typeface, Senator, designed by Zuzana Licko in 1988, was an unexpectedly appropriate typeface for an exhibition on eighteenth-century Japanese calligrapher, Hakuin Ekaku. The labels were printed on maple wood paper, harmonizing with the interior of the unique Japanese Pavilion at LACMA. Posters that were printed on washi-like digital Japanese paper were displayed in traditional wood stands and served as directional signage in the building lobby.
